Journals of a Gay Vegan: Journals
Suicide, I Understand
I would never consider suicide, but I have no trouble understanding
why so many gay teenagers take their lives. Being forced to live a lie,
never being allowed to love those you're attracted to--the life of a
closeted gay teenager is far worse than any hell God could ever send
one to.
Hearing your own mother refer to people like you as "those damn faggots."
Hearing your friends at school continually make fun of the one guy who had
the courage to come out of the closet. Hearing your own pastor condemn
homosexuality as the ultimate sin. Hearing the United States courts
continually say that love between two people of the same gender will never
be legally recognized. And yet continually hearing your own heart long to
be with someone of the same gender. How can that be fair?
"It is estimated that a teen in the United States takes his
or her own life every 5 hours because he or she is gay, lesbian, bisexual,
or transgender, and can not deal with the added stresses that society puts
upon them."
The best way to combat homophobia is to come out of the closet.
Be who you are.
